Why Scent? Why Art?
Human perception is inherently multi-sensory. We experience the world not only through sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell but also through internal senses such as proprioception (body position), the vestibular sense (balance), thermoreception (temperature), nociception (pain), and even our sense of time. All these inputs are continuously integrated, shaping perception, emotion, and aesthetic experience — often without our awareness.
The festival focused on integrating scent into visual art, music, literature, dance, and performance, offering an immersive multisensory programme of exhibitions, performances, workshops, lectures, and a scent walk through Riga.
By integrating scent into artistic practice, the festival highlighted a sensory dimension that cannot be photographed, streamed, or digitally replicated. In an increasingly screen-based culture, scent brings back presence, intimacy, and embodied engagement. Artists were encouraged to treat scent as an active material — selected, shaped, and harmonized with their works — rather than a background accident, reflecting the natural multi-sensory structure of human perception.
